The time has come and gone for the delegation of Elders Perry Van Egdom and Glenn Kooima to bid us farewell and begin their journey home again. Here are a few pictures of their last few days here. First of all, a few random shots.

The men have been fascinated by the jeepneys here - even wondered if it were possible to bring one home to Northwest Iowa.

The amount of traffic on the streets of Manila is always something to behold, and both men decided early on they would be very content to stay away from the driver's seat.

The house lizard is a common sight and a good friend to have in order to keep down the bug and mosquito population.

Not too far from Antipolo we were able to show the men some of the numerous rice fields here.

Now to fill you in a little on this past Sunday - a Sunday I'm sure the men will not soon forget. We attended the First Reformed Church of Bulacan in the morning, and the Berean Protestant Reformed Church in the afternoon. The delegation was able to have the unique experience of four worship services in one Lord's day. They were also able to witness an adult baptism, followed by the baptism of five of that family's children. It was a full, but most enjoyable day in the Lord and in the fellowship of His saints here.

At both the FRCB and later the BPRC, the men were given opportunity to give greetings and speak some words of encouragement. Both of them did so in both churches, with words that were a blessing to us all. Here Bro. Glenn does so in the FRCB.

A delicious meal was served, after which we soon left for the worship services of the Berean PRC (which began at 1:00 p.m.).

Between the two worship services (the 2nd one begins at 3:30 p.m.), the delegates were able to observe the Tagalog catechism class that the elders lead on the Heidelberg Catechism.

Gifts of appreciation were given to the delegates - good momentos of their time in the Philippines.

After Bro. Glenn gave greetings, it was Bro. Perry's turn to do so as well. What they said once again served to encourage us all in the work and cause of the Lord here.

The Berean Protestant Reformed Church. The men were again encouraged by the evidence of the Lord's blessing in giving many children and young people to this congregation.

We took Bro's Perry and Glenn to the airport at about 4:45 this morning. They are due to fly out of Manila at 8:00 a.m. our time. We hope they have a safe journey home and can soon be with their families again.

We cannot express fully our appreciation for their visit. We and our families enjoyed having them live with us in our homes, and accompanying us to meet the churches and fellowships we are privileged to work in here. Their visit will no doubt help them in their understanding of our life and work here, but it also helps us in maintaining good contact and communication with our churches. We appreciate the men's willingness to come here, and also the sacrifice of their families as they did this work on behalf of the churches. Once again, a sincere thanks to them and to the whole denomination for this concrete evidence of your support.

The next few days will be busier, with the Berean PRC consistory meeting tomorrow (Saturday) and visits on Sunday to both the First Reformed Church of Bulacan in the morning and the Berean Protestant Reformed Church in the afternoon.

Again we express our thanks that the men could come and have come, and that thereby they have been able to learn firsthand about our work and life in the Philippines, as well as to meet fellow saints here.

In the past few days, Glenn and Perry have had the opportunity to look around Metro Manila a little, including our neighborhood (Beverly Hills) and our city (Antipolo). They were also able to meet some of the Bereans. We'll let the following pictures tell the story.

A tricycle ride was first, as we had some errands to do in Antipolo, including a stop at the Post Office.

Perry (himself a mailman) was glad to meet the Postmaster at the ACPO. (I think she's the lady with black hair.)

We opted for a jeepney ride on the way home.

But what's so funny?

The jeepney ride involved taking four different jeepneys. We waited here for our second one. Now that they've done it once, they could easily figure out on their own which jeepneys to catch ..... so they say.

Tuesday night was the Berean PRC's weekly Bible study. At the moment, the BPRC is watching the DVDs of the seminary's conference on the KJV. This week we watched Prof. Gritters' speech regarding Bible translations.

Time for another brief update. This time concerning Monday's activities.

Perry and Glenn accompanied us on Monday to our 7M (Monday Morning Metro Manila Monthly Ministers' Meeting), which meets twice a month. Up to now we have used this time to review Reformed Dogmatics, but recently we also began teaching Homiletics.

Today (Sunday) the two visiting elders were able to accompany each of us missionaries to different churches/fellowships. Mr. Perry Van Egdom accompanied Rev. Smit and his family to the All of Grace Protestant Reformed Fellowship in Gabaldon. Mr. Glenn Kooima joined us in our visits to the Maranatha church in Valenzuela in the morning, and to the Berean PRC in Cubao in the afternoon.

In all, we covered a total of 50 miles today (Glenn's guess was close, at 60). We left home at 8:30 a.m., and arrived back again at 7:30 p.m. It was a full but enjoyable day for Glenn, and for us all, and certainly an encouragement to us and to the saints here to have a member of the FMC visiting us and them, and receiving a small taste of the catholicity of the church and body of Christ.

We've had an eventful year - with the continuation of our regular work (in the First Reformed Church of Bulacan, Christian Faith Ministry in Batasan Hills, All of Grace Protestant Reformed Fellowship in Gabaldon, visiting contacts in Inayauan in Negros Occidental, and occasionally preaching in the Berean Protestant Reformed Church), meeting new groups and individuals, beginning a new work (in a Reformed congregation in Valenzuela, Manila), and having many visitors from abroad. We are looking forward to another fruitful year in 2012 and are eagerly anticipating the arrival and help of Brother Vernon and Sister Melody Ibe and their son MJ in July of this year, Lord willing. We pray God will use them in the work here for His glory and for the salvation of His people in the Philippines.

A sincere thank-you to all for the greetings, cards and letters you have sent, as well as for the interest and support shown to and through the Smit family while they were on their furlough in North America this past June. All these things are an encouragement in the work - a concrete evidence to us that the work here is remembered and prayed for.

May God grant you all a Blessed New Year!

* Missionaries' Inayauan Visit

This past week, Rev. Smit and I visited our contacts in Negros Occidental. We have been in touch with some of these men for many years (since the late 1990's). Various delegations visited them while the Philippines was being investigated by our churches as a possible mission field. And contact has been maintained ever since - also through occasional visits and conferences.

We flew out of Manila on Tuesday, December 20.

After landing in Bacolod City, we drove down to Inayauan. We were traveling during the peak of the sugar-cane season, and thus had to negotiate many trucks, as well as the occasional load spill.

Beautiful rural scenery awaited us along the way.

Pastor Ezequias Rosal is one of our main contacts, and lives in Inayauan. He greeted us at his home with a refreshing drink and snack.

Another of our main contacts is Pastor Eduardo Donasco. He lives in Si-alay, a little south of Inayauan. We stopped and chatted for a while along the road.

On Wednesday, a conference was held in the church building of the Reformed Free Church in Inayauan. We even had a visitor there from our Protestant Reformed Seminary!

Since we arrived early, I had the opportunity to take a walk down the main street of the small, rural town of Inayauan.

Some were up as early as 4:00 a.m. to begin making preparations for our lunch. Over 30 attendees were expected.

Rev. Smit spoke on "Saving Faith." Later in the morning, I spoke on "God's Counsel." 35 adults attended the conference, indicating to us that there is significant interest in the Reformed faith in this part of Negros Occidental.

Pastor Ariel Labrador (red shirt) is another of our main contacts in the area. He lives in Canturay, about 15 km south of Inayauan.

Some children were present throughout the day. They came along either with their parents or grandparents.

A few ladies attended the conference - and also helped with the snacks and the noon meal.

After lunch, we had a question and answer time, which lasted a couple hours. Many good questions were asked - regarding our speeches as well as on various other subjects.

The conference attendees (which includes us, of course) enjoyed the times of fellowship. We are also thankful for the opportunity we had to meet these men, to get to know them, and to get a sense of their sincere interest in the truth.

We arrived home again late Thursday afternoon - thankful for safe travels, and for the blessed work the Lord gives us to do.

* Hanko's Visit

Dad and Mom visited us once again this past week. On their way to Singapore, the stop here gives them a chance to get over their jet lag and rest up before the busy schedule in Singapore. We had an enjoyable time with them.

The Sunday they were here, we were privileged to visit First Reformed Church in Bulacan. This was their anniversary Sunday.

Monday was a public holiday here and the Smits invited the Bereans to spend the day at their house. Hankos were able to visit for a while as well and renew acquaintances with the Bereans once again.

We were able to go away for a day to the Taal Volcano south of Manila. The volcano (still active) is in the middle of a lake, and also has a lake inside it. Unique! Although we could not see the inside lake, it is possible to take a boat ride across to the volcano, hike up and get a good view of it. However those activities weren't on our agenda for the day and we simply enjoyed the view from the adjacent ridge.

We had a recent interesting continuation of the story of our bees. As you saw on a previous blog, the bees left us to make their home and honey elsewhere.

We looked up this bird on the web and found out some interesting facts. He's a honey buzzard and he feeds mostly on the larvae and nests of wasps. It is thought that honey buzzards have a chemical deterrant in their feathers that protects them from attack by the wasps (or bees).

* Typhoons Pedring and Quiel

Recently two typhoons hit northern Luzon (Manila is in central to south Luzon) causing much flooding and damage to crops. Typhoon Pedring (international name, Nesat) came on September 27 and Typhoon Quiel (international name, Nalgae) just a few days later on October 1. In Manila we received a lot of rain, but nothing like they had further north. On our drive to Gabaldon this past weekend we saw much evidence of the damage done to trees, roads, homes and crops. Many of the members of the All of Grace Protestant Reformed Fellowhip in Gabaldon had two feet or more of water in their homes, but thankfully none lost their homes or their lives.

The closer we got to Gabaldon the more severe the damage was. There were huge washouts through the countryside and across the roads.

* "Bees Be Gone"

About a month ago, we showed you some pictures of bees in our yard. They've been around for a couple months, and now and then someone has been chased by them (e.g., a telephone company linesman last week). But last night they departed. Not sure why. Perhaps the warmer weather (in the mid 90's yesterday). Here are some before and after pictures.

Unfortunately, no honey - the comb was dry. Some red ants were still hanging around, so we're guessing they had a feast.

The First Reformed Church of Bulacan has an outreach work in the rural town of Albuera, Leyte, in the central Philippines. This past weekend I (Rev. Kleyn) was able to accompany Pastor John Flores for a very enjoyable 3 day visit there. After a 1 hour plane flight, and a 3 hour bus ride across the island of Leyte, the final leg of our journey was by jeepney. We stayed with Bro. Felix and Sis. Norma Montalban.

Upon arrival on Friday evening, we were immediately served a delicious supper. Afterwards, we visited for some time at the church building with the members of the fellowship. Pastor Flores led them in singing (Psalter numbers in Tagalog), and in a brief meditation.

On Saturday morning (after meeting with another contact the PRCA missionaries have in Leyte), we took a walk to visit many of the members of the fellowship in their homes. In this way we were able especially to inform them of our upcoming meetings (a speech on Saturday afternoon, and services on Sunday).

The town of Albuera is on the ocean (Ormoc Bay, South China Sea). Early on Saturday afternoon, we took a walk to the sea and even a brief swim. Later in the afternoon, I spoke to the fellowship concerning the "Covenant of Grace."

On Sunday morning, Pastor Flores preached. This was the group's 5th anniversary as a fellowship. Pastor Flores spoke on John 17:1-9. A good number of visitors also joined us for this worship service. A lunch fellowship followed. On Sunday afternoon, I spoke on the place of children in the covenant.

The people in southern Leyte speak Cebuano. They also understand some Tagalog and English. While I was speaking in English, Pastor Flores translated for me - sentence by sentence. For the most part he translated into Tagalog, but he also knows some Cebuano and incorporated that into his translation as well.

Their interest in the truth was obvious, as evident by their attention and by the many questions they asked (mostly regarding infant baptism, and marriage). May they continue to grow in the truth by means of the labors of the First Reformed Church of Bulacan, as well as through the materials that we are able to provide them.

We had an enjoyable day this past Monday. We, with the First Reformed Church in Bulacan, planned an outing for their youth and invited the other youth as well. All who were able, came to the Kleyns for a day of games, food and fellowship. We had about 48 people here.

Getting warmed up with a few games of schoolbus (The idea is to line up in order of the days of the week. The day that is called out has to go the the front seat and the rest have to get in order following. Last ones to their seat are off the bus!)

The young people and men headed off to the basketball court in the subdivision for more games. Most of the ladies stayed behind at the house. We visited and looked at family pictures, old and new.

Devotions before lunch included singing some English and Tagalog Psalter numbers, and a short meditation about Daniel, as a young man, taking a faithful stand against the king's decree by continuing to pray to God three times a day.

We had tacos (with rice, veggies, and salsa), chips, and then canned fruit and bars for dessert.

* Reformed Bookshelf

Just recently, through the Smits return from their furlough and through a shipment of boxes, we received another stock of books and pamphlets for our bookshelf.

Sales have been humming. In the first week we have sold 70 books, with more orders pending.

A pastor who received the booklist wrote: "You have a good offer list of Reformed books for the church to be strengthened in the Reformed faith. I will tell ... about these. He needs Reformed books for himself in Bible study and for the church also."

And another wrote: "I informed ... that I'm looking for a bookshop where I can purchase good books (at a lower price), particularly books of Reformed conviction. He initially gave me this list of books of which I am interested to purchase for my personal copy and for our church library. This means 2 copies for each [of the following 12] title. ... I will appreciate it very much if you can send me list of other books that are available now for sale."

And a pastor who recently received his order wrote: "I am very glad to have these precious books. These will be a great help in my church work, ... Thanks be to GOD and to you for sending these books."

We add our sincere thanks to the PRC for their generous support of this worthwhile cause!

* A Few Things

Just a brief post to cover a few items of interest.

It's great to have the Smit family back here again. We've heard about their furlough travels and presentations. We've also seen many of their pictures (no telling as to whom we saw, where you were, what you were doing, etc. :-)) They mentioned they had an enjoyable time, and appreciated the opportunity to visit many of our churches. We, with them, appreciate very much the interest and support shown for the work - as evidenced by the attendance at the presentations, the questions asked, the encouraging comments, the greetings sent, etc. Thanks to all for this. It's a blessing and great encouragement to us in our work.

Smits left on their furlough on Tuesday, June 6. (They return home soon - July 20, Lord willing.) We have missed them. But in the meantime we have kept busy with visitors and various other activities.

The Baldwins (Mary is from First PRC in Grand Rapids, MI) came for the weekend of June 19. We had a great time getting to know them all. They really enjoyed the experience of meeting fellow saints in another part of the world.

The same weekend the Baldwins were here, Brother (Kuya) Max Lising of the Berean PRC passed away. (Three of Brother Max's children are in the Berean church.) In Rev. Smit's absence, Rev. Kleyn did the funeral, and had a few words at the graveside.

On our June 12 trip to the All of Grace PR Fellowship in Gabaldon we were invited for lunch to Sister Marie's house. We enjoyed the food and fellowship there.

On the weekend of July 10 we had visitors again, this time from the Covenant Evangelical Reformed Church in Singapore. Colin and Kim Lim were with us for a few days. We enjoyed their company and hope their visit is an incentive for more people to visit and get to meet and know fellow believers here.

the fellowship in Gabaldon since Rev. Kleyn had to preach there.

We weren't able to stay for lunch this time, though. We had to return quickly to Manila so Rev. Kleyn could also preach for the Berean PRC at 3:30. (Rev. Kleyn covered as much of the preaching as possible in the Berean PRC during Rev. Smit's absence - about half. The other services were led by the elders.) We ate our packed lunch in the car on the way instead. It was interesting, to say the least, trying to make sandwiches in the car on the bumpy roads!

We've had a lot of rain while the Smits have been gone. One weekend we had 13" in 48 hours! We learned that we are best off staying home when that happens since many of the roads become flooded.

We are looking forward to the Smit's return next week. We have missed their fellowship and their help in the work. But we are also thankful they could visit various PR congregations in North America, give presentations on the work here, do some preaching, and also have some time with family.

* Showers and Flowers

Rainy season has begun here. Started in May, actually. We've had rain every day for the last week, in the form of a couple tropical storms. Rainfall over the weekend came to just under 5 inches. And so far today, 4.5 inches ..... and it's still raining. Along with rainy season come cooler temperatures, something we enjoy. But also flooded roads, and thus longer travel times. For example, late this afternoon it took us nearly 4 hours to cover just 36 kilometers (22.5 miles).

Often we can see the storms building over Manila, and can witness some beautiful thunder heads. Recently we were able to get a few pictures from a hilltop in our neighborhood (referred to as "The 2nd Floor").

As a result of the rains, many new flowers spring to life and display their beauty. God gives us much variety to enjoy in His creation. Here's a sample of some of it. Enjoy! We'll leave it to you to figure out the names.

In the distant past, I (along with my brothers) was once accused of being an "aesthetic clod" (source remains anonymous). Hopefully these pictures prove otherwise. ;-)

* Cemeteries

We were recently driving in Antipolo and happened to see the cemetery there, so we drove in to have a look. This one is a public cemetery where, we are told, people rent a spot for some years. They then pay another fee to keep their loved one's body there, otherwise it is removed to make room for others. I think many then will have the remains cremated.

There was a private cemetery across the street which we also had a look at.

A lot of the cemeteries have "houses" built over the graves. The RCC Filipinos worship their dead. On All Saints Day in November, some families gather at the graves of their loved ones and spend time together there.

There is also a Chinese cemetery in Manila which we drove through once. The Chinese also worship their ancestors, and this is reflected in the gravesites.

There were altars at each grave as well as seating inside the buildings for families who gather there.

* Recent Trips to Gabaldon

We visit the All of Grace Protestant Reformed Fellowship in Gabaldon at least once a month. Sometimes we go there twice - whenever there are five Sundays in a month. This PR Fellowship is located about five hours from our home in Antipolo City, Manila.

Farms and hills surround the small rural town of Gabaldon.

Rebekah and Irene Smit accompanied us on the first weekend in May.

During the long road trip, Sharon and the girls kept themselves occupied

with some crafts in the back seat.

Along the way we met a merchant traveling with his wares.

John and Jay Smit came along when we visited

on the fifth Sunday in May.

The children were very interested in their catechism materials ....

and (as always) in having their picture taken.

The children also had fun comparing their noses to the size of Rev. Kleyn's.

After lunch, we visited briefly with two of the elderly ladies in one of their homes,

as one of them was unable to attend because of sickness. An enjoyable visit!

It continues to be a blessing to get to know the saints in Gabaldon better, and to experience and strengthen the bond of faith that unites us with them.

We recently reached a milestone with the ongoing project of translating "Reformed Witness Hour" messages into Tagalog: All the 2010 RWH messages have been translated!

The RWH messages are produced by a committee that is sponsored and supported by the Protestant Reformed denomination. These messages are broadcast on more than 20 radio stations in North America. Rev. Carl Haak is the current radio pastor, though other ministers of the PRCA also produce the messages from time to time. In 2010, messages were produced by Rev. C. Haak, Rev. W. Bruinsma, and Rev. R. Kleyn.

The translation of the written form of these messages has been done by Pastor John Flores, pastor of the First Reformed Church of Bulacan. This is the congregation we visit and in which Rev. Kleyn preaches and teaches on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month.

* Judgment Day?

Harold Camping's prophecy that the world will end on May 21 has reached the Philippines also. We have been seeing, for some time now, signs advertising the prophecy on the backs of buses, on jeepneys, on billboards, etc. We have not personally met anyone who believes this will actually happen. But we have heard of some who are not planting their fields in anticipation of the supposed return.

Tuesday night at Bible study we had a good discussion about this false prophecy. Among other things, it was mentioned that many of the signs that will precede the coming of Christ have not yet been fulfilled. The point was also made that our calling is to watch, and pray, and work. The Lord will take care of the rest.

"But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. ... For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch" (Mark 13:32, 34).

The Berean PRC hosted their annual conference on Friday, May 6, 2011. This year the subject of the conference was, Church Membership for Reformed Believers. Rev. Smit and Rev. Kleyn each gave two speeches on the following topics:
     The Obligation of Membership in a True Church (Rev. Kleyn)
     The Importance of the Confessions for Reformed Believers (Rev. Smit)
     The Reformed Believer's Duties Within His Congregation (Rev. Smit)
     The Reformed Believer's Duties Outside His Congregation (Rev. Kleyn)

There were over 70 registrants. Each registrant was given a free copy of Rev. Key's pamphlet, Church Membership in an Evil Age.

We set up a book table to sell RFPA books at the discounted price and also pamphlets at a minimal cost. We sold 30 books, about 100 pamphlets, and a couple of cd sets. Also, there were more than 100 pamphlets and old issues of the Standard Bearer and Beacon Lights free for the taking, which all went.

* "Holy Week"

We recently had "Holy Week" here and witnessed again some of the Catholic practices and superstitions connected with the week. During this time of year the Catholics have a practice of visiting churches. The Catholic Church in Antipolo City is a main attraction.

We turned around and took a different way home.

There are also Stations of the Cross (also called Via Dolorosa, or Way of the Cross) set up everywhere. The number and order varies somewhat, but there are usually 14 stations. This year some were set up along the road toward the Antipolo church (which also goes past our subdivsion). Pilgrims will stop at each station to pray. In a way we hesitate to publish these pictures, but we do want to give you some idea of what the Catholic religion is like here.

During the week, we often see vehicles carrying images probably in preparation for the processions they have on Good Friday.

"They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place he shall not remove; yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer nor save him out of his trouble." Isaiah 46:7

On Thursday evening we went to the entrance of our subdivision to watch for a while the procession of pilgims to the church. There seemed a lot more people than last year.

We were on the road on Friday afternoon and witnessed a funeral procession for "Jesus." Some were carrying candles, some dressed in white robes, some were pushing carts with images, but at the center of it all was a cart with an image of Jesus in a coffin.

It is sad to see so many deluded and on a wrong way. We are thankful for the truth of God's Word that Jesus came down from the cross never to return to it again. He conquered death and the grave and hell, never to be subject to them again. And He is alive forevermore!

* First Annual Combined Outing

One of the goals of the mission work here is to establish, Lord willing, a denomination. The various groups also desire this and to that end the First Reformed Church of Bulacan planned the First Annual Combined Outing so that the various groups could get to know each other and start, not just formal relations, but also personal fellowship and communion of the saints. The outing was at a beautiful resort park with pools and an area we could reserve for ourselves. This way our group could be together for all the activities. And there were a lot of them!

* Philippines' Reformed Bookshelf

Synod 2010 of the Protestant Reformed Churches in America approved the proposal of a bookstore of RFPA (Reformed Free Publishing Association) books for the Philippines. Part of the proposal was to have the PRCA congregations take collections to subsidize the books, so that they could be sold at reduced prices to the churches and contacts here in the Philippines. Because of the generosity of the PRCA, we are now able to make this good Reformed literature available to God's people here.

Nick and Deb willingly carried several extra cases full of books, when they came to visit, so that we wouldn't have any shipping costs. Thanks Nick and Deb!

We soon got the books unpacked and ready for sales.

Nick and Deb also brought with them some used books from an individual in one of the congregations (see the bottom shelf above). This proved to be a good avenue for these used books - most of them have sold already!

In the first week of sales, we sold about 45 books! The people here are thrilled to have these books available at prices they can afford.

There are two bodies that oversee the mission work of the Protestant Reformed Churches in the Philippines. The first is Doon Protestant Reformed Church in Doon, IA. They are the ones who, on behalf of our denomination, called the two missionaries to the mission field. The missionaries and their families are members of Doon PRC and are under the supervision of Doon's Consistory.

* Tagalog Translations

The book Doctrine According to Godliness by Rev. R. Hanko has now been translated into Tagalog! Elder Rod Bongat and Brother Jun Villegas worked together on this project. They hope to have it published and available for sale soon.

Also, Reformed Witness Hour messages of the Protestant Reformed Churches in America are now being translated on a regular basis by Pastor John Flores of the First Reformed Church in Bulacan. These translated sermons are being used by the All of Grace Protestant Reformed Fellowship in Gabaldon on the Sundays when the Kleyns cannot be present. We have begun with 2010 messages and hope eventually to continue into 2011. The translated sermons are also posted on our missionaries' audio and literature page. On our way to Gabaldon this past weekend we were driving through the area of Tarlac City. We saw a LOT of trucks loaded down with stalks of something or other. We guessed maybe it was sugar cane. Upon inquiry we found out our guess was correct. There is a sugar cane processing plant near Tarlac to which the sugar cane farmers from miles around bring their crops.

Every Wednesday from 11:30 to 1:30 Rev. Smit and the Kleyns go to Faith Academy (where the Smits send their children) for Tagalog class. Our teacher is Nona Caballero, wife of Tonton. They are the couple who run the World Team Guest House where many of our ministers have stayed (and experienced the Caballero's warm hospitality) when visiting the Philippines. Nona also teaches Tagalog to highschoolers at Faith Academy. We are thankful to have her as a tutor and for her patience with us as we try to learn a new language at 40 (+) years old!

On Saturday morning, as mentioned last time, Gerald and Alan were able to attend the Berean PRCP's consistory meeting.

After the consistory lunch, we put our bags in the car, picked up Alan from the Smits, and left for Gabaldon. We arrived in Cabanatuan in time for supper and got to our hotel at about 7:30, in time to prepare for the Lord's Day the following day. We headed for Gabaldon at 7:00 am on Sunday morning, armed with our breakfast of pan de sal (a delicious bread here which we bought the night before), granola bars, bananas and juice. We arrived at the church building just after 8:00.

Rev. Kleyn first taught the children catechism, then preached on worshiping God in spirit and in truth, and then taught the Heidelberg Catechism, the Lord's Day on why we are called Christians. A comment after the service and classes were finished was, "Magandang umaga" (a good morning). God's word is effective even through the barriers of language and culture. We were able to have lunch and to fellowship with the people for a while.

Monday morning the missionaries and delegates headed off for the city. The missionaries had to go to the Christian Missionary Service to do some yearly paperwork for the visas. The delegates got to experience yet another part of the city as well as more Manila traffic. They made it home in time for supper at the Kleyns.

The delegates left early Tuesday morning. We have heard that they made it safely home again. We are thankful for that and for their work here and the encouragement given. May God prosper the work for the salvation of His church and the glory of His name.

This continues the story of the delegates 2011 visit to the Philippines. Wednesday the Kleyns and Rev. Smit had Tagalog Class at Faith Academy. The delegates took that time to visit and talk over their work. Wednesday afternoon when the children came home from school the delegates did family visitation with the Smits. They then came here for supper and followed that up with family visitation with the Kleyns. We are thankful for the care and oversight of the calling church in this.

Thursday we were all able to go to Faith Academy for lunch at the Vee, the cafeteria there.

On Saturday the missionaries had to prepare for Sunday, so Tricia and the kids and I took the delegates to Faith Academy in the afternoon. The kids enjoyed showing off their classrooms to the visitors. Then some of us played soccer, some went swimming, and some just played.

Sunday morning we picked up Alan DeBoer bright and early from the Smit's place and headed off for the First Reformed Church in Bulacan. The delegates enjoyed meeting the people there and singing and worshipping with them. They even got to sing a couple Psalter numbers in Tagalog.

The delegation of Gerald Brummel (representing the Foreign Mission Committee) and Alan De Boer (representing Doon PRC's Council) arrived here a few days ago. Their visit, on behalf of the denomination, is part of the work of our churches in the oversight of the missionaries and the mission field (e.g., conduct family visitation with the missionary families, observe and discuss the work of the missionaries, meet the saints here, etc.).

Alan and Gerald were scheduled to arrive late Wednesday night, but weren't able to set their feet on Philippine soil until early Friday morning (around 1:00 am). Troubles with the plane in Sioux Falls (on account of ice) meant they missed their flight out of Minneapolis. So they ended up being rerouted, spending a night in Detroit, then being rerouted again. Finally, after more than 48 hours of travel, they arrived safely to our tropical climate - glad to be here, and glad to enjoy the heat. One thing that couldn't keep up with all their rerouting, however, was their luggage. It eventually turned up at our house 24 hours later (at 12:30 am Saturday morning).

On their first Sunday, the delegation plans to accompany us as we worship in the morning in the First Reformed Church of Bulacan. In the afternoon, Lord willing, we will attend the second worship service of the Berean Protestant Reformed Church in Quezon City, Manila.

A big thank you to everyone who remembered us with pictures and cards and letters over the holiday season. The reason I am writing this now and not earlier is that the mail is still rolling in. The mail takes a little longer this time of year, but we don't mind the extended time of receiving extra mail. We will try to respond to you all individually, but it may take us a while!

This post takes the place of an end of year letter to friends and family, since all the information about our lives in the past year is posted on the earlier blogs!

We are thankful for the support and prayers for and the interest in the work here. May God further the cause of His kingdom in the Philippines and everywhere else in the world for the glory of His Name, the salvation of His catholic Church, and the coming of Christ.

* Youth Outing

The First Reformed Church of Bulacan organized a combined youth outing for this past Tuesday, December 21. Young people from the FRCB, the Berean PRC, and the Christian Faith Ministry of Batasan Hills attended. Three ministers also joined them. The outing was at Eco Park in Quezon City - a little over an hour from here.

The youth and pastors had an enjoyable day together. On the way home some were asking, "When is part two?" We believe this was a good way for the young people to get to know each other, and thus also to promote fellowship between the churches here.

This week we were able to witness the beauty of God's creation in a couple of unique ways. Sunday we were driving to First Reformed Church in Bulacan. It was raining off and on and the sun was shining, so a huge rainbow was stretched across the northwestern sky, for most of our two hour drive there.

Notice the double? Did you know that when there is a double rainbow the second one is a mirror image of the first? The order of the colors is in reverse.

And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. Genesis 9:16

Tuesday night was the lunar eclipse. We climbed to the top of the grassy plateau (the second floor, we found out it's called) in the subdivision at about 5:30PM just as the sun was setting. There was a beautiful cooling breeze, but at first no moon. Then right at 5:45 the moon appeared over the distant hill and showed itself in all it's beauty. We quickly called the Smits and they all joined us.

On our walk through the neighborhood we can drop in to say hello to the Smits. Their new place is only a few blocks further than their old one from our place.

* Our Neighborhood - Part 1

Welcome to Beverly Hills Subdivision! So nice of you to take a jeepney ride to see us!

Handy that the jeepney will drop you right at our subdivision gate. From there it's only a few blocks walk. Or you can take a tricycle if you want to.

They just recently redid the whole entrance area, so it's looking pretty spiffy!

You'll pass Smit's old house on your way up the main road.

Turn left on 3rd Ave., take it a few blocks down to Sunrise Dr. and you are almost to our house.

The white lion by our neighbor's (our landlady) gate is a good landmark.

Home, Sweet Home

And now that you've had time to relax and have something cold to drink with us, let's go on a tour of the neighborhood.

We usually take this road on our early morning walks. You can buy your phone cards or potato chips, if you're hungry, at the little corner store (sari-sari) on the left.

A little further down that same road we can take a walk up a track to the top of a grassy plateau. From there we can get pretty nice views of the city. There's even a rainbow this morning....

And lots of smog!

In Michigan the snow takes over the roads in the winter. Here the green growth takes over in the rainy season! You can still get a car through though.

* Grocery Shopping

Today we have to go grocery shopping. Need to get some things for supper tonight. We'll go to the wet market in Antipolo and to some of the grocery stores nearby. There is lots to choose from, so I hope you're ready! First we'll shop for our meat.

You can also choose from a wide selection of beef, pork or chicken.

(The Filipinos, with their sense of humor, call these the helmet and adidas!)

If we are cooking a Filipino meal (breakfast, lunch or supper) we have to have rice.

Do you know which kind to get?! And you thought rice was rice was rice!

Now for some veggies and maybe some fruit for dessert.

One thing we have learned here is that there is an endless and amazing variety of fruits and vegetables in God's creation. So many things we never heard of. Here is a short list of some of the names.

Fruits: Atis, Dalandon, Durian, Guava, Guyabank, Jackfruit, Lanzones, Makopa, Papaya, Pomelo, Rambutan, Santol. Just the bananas alone present a big variety -- saba, cavendish, senorita, etc. Some of them can be fried and then carmelized with brown sugar. Yum! Some can be boiled. Some are eaten as they are. (Hmmm. I wonder which ones make the best peanut butter and banana sandwiches.......)

Veggies: Ampalaya, Alogbati, Eggplant, Kangkong, Okra, Pechay, Sayote.

I'm sure there are many more we haven't learned about yet. Some of the names are familiar, but not real common to North America. You can also get the common everyday veggies here -- corn, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, etc.
